I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about the fitness tracker I use. It’s a Garmin 735xt, and I’ll cut to the chase: it’s pretty freaking awesome!
Here’s why: it looks great, it’s accurate and the interface is simple to use but packed with data. It’s also a smart watch, so texts, calls and app notifications come through without having to pull out my phone (lifesaver, honestly). My favorite feature? Customizable watch faces allowing me to control what data I see with each glance at my wrist. The downside? The notification vibration is extremely noticeable (read: put your phone on DND if you’re in a meeting).
One of the key reasons for choosing this watch over, say the Apple Watch (series 2, waterproof), is the complexity of data that Garmin reports on. Things like hip oscillation, cadence, VO2 max are all things you’ll find in the app which syncs to this watch. It also tracks about any kind of sport you can throw at it, with a key focus on swim (pool and open water), bike, and running.
I ended up buying the dual heart rate strap bundle, which includes the running HR strap and the swim HR strap. Both straps sync’d easily but the swim one sits at the bottom of a drawer since using it during lap swim is pointless as it slips every time I push off a wall. Otherwise the HR strap adds a ton of awesome data to help identify gaps in your stride or form!
Battery life is actually pretty decent on this watch, of course activity really plays a big factor in how long it lasts. Long run? Be sure to charge up before heading out. Generally I get about four days before throwing it on the charger. It only takes an average of 30 minutes to top it off and then I’m right back at it!
As a final tip, I’d highly recommend getting the screen cover stickers for the watch. Since the face is plastic, not glass, it is just asking to be scratched, but not with a thin film on top!
